The Author
L. Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, in 1856 and grew up on his family's prosperous estate near Syracuse. A sickly, imaginative child, he was taught at home until he was sent to Peekskill Military Academy at twelve, where he hated the harsh discipline, and he came home two years later after a serious collapse. As a young man he drifted between occupations, acting, writing plays and raising chickens before running a store and editing a newspaper in Aberdeen, in the Dakota Territory, both of which failed. He and his wife, Maud Gage, eventually moved to Chicago with their four sons, and according to family tradition Maud's mother, the suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage, encouraged him to write down the stories he made up for the boys. Success came in his forties with Father Goose, a bestseller in 1899, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz did even better the following year. His later theater and film projects were costly, and he declared bankruptcy in 1911, though he wrote thirteen more Oz novels before his death in Hollywood in 1919.
