The Call of the Wild
During the Gold Rush, a California house-dog named Buck is stolen and dragged to the frozen Yukon, where seemingly everything wants him dead, from the men with clubs to the bitter cold. He ought to die. Instead, he hears howling in the distance and feels an answer rising in his chest.

The Author
Jack London was born in San Francisco in 1876. His biological father is generally believed to have been the astrologer William Chaney, who denied paternity, and London was raised in Oakland by his mother and his stepfather, John London. He left school at fourteen for hard, poorly paid work, and as a teenager he poached oysters from private beds in San Francisco Bay and sailed on a sealing ship before riding freight trains across the country and spending a month in jail for vagrancy. He went on to finish high school and pass the entrance exams for the University of California, Berkeley, but money troubles forced him out after one semester. In 1897 he joined the Klondike Gold Rush and came back to California with scurvy instead of a fortune, though the dogs and harsh landscape of the North gave him his best material. The Call of the Wild, published in 1903, brought him international fame, and he went on to produce more than fifty books before he died of kidney failure on his California ranch in 1916, at forty.
