The Author
Mother Goose is the old woman whose name is on nursery rhyme books, but she probably never lived. In France in the 1600s, "Mother Goose" was what people called a woman who told children wonderful stories. In 1697 a French writer named Charles Perrault put her name on a book of fairy tales. About sixty years later John Newbery in London borrowed it for Mother Goose's Melody, a tiny, hugely popular book of the old songs that nurses sang to babies. In Boston, people told a story that Mother Goose was a real grandmother named Elizabeth Goose, who sang songs to her grandchildren all day while other children came running to listen. Her son-in-law was supposed to have printed her rhymes in a book, but the book has never been found.
