The Author
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to a father who struggled in business and a mother whose inheritance kept the family comfortable. At Princeton he spent more time writing musicals and stories than studying, and after leaving in 1917 to join the army, he wrote much of his first novel while waiting to be sent overseas. This Side of Paradise was published in 1920 to great success, and a week later he married Zelda Sayre. The couple became celebrities of what Fitzgerald named the Jazz Age, and the decade's glamour and recklessness became the material of his fiction. They moved to France in 1924, where he finished The Great Gatsby, which was well reviewed in 1925 but sold fewer than 23,000 copies that year. In the Depression his readers drifted away as his debts grew and Zelda's mental illness worsened. He went to Hollywood in 1937 to write screenplays and died of a heart attack three years later, at forty-four, long before The Great Gatsby came to be regarded as one of the defining American novels of the twentieth century.
