The Book
The Steppenwolf
"The Steppenwolf was of a different nature. His was not the happiness of the artist who is absorbed in his work, nor yet of the thoughtful observer, nor yet of the ordinary man of affairs. He was simply a man who by temperament and destiny was given over to solitude, who had let go of humanity."

The Author
Hermann Hesse was born in 1877 in Calw, in Germany's Black Forest, into a deeply religious family that expected him to enter the church. At thirteen he decided he would be "a poet or nothing," and after seven months at the seminary in Maulbronn he ran away. In the troubled year that followed he attempted suicide and was placed in several institutions. He trained as a mechanic and then as a bookseller before his first novel, Peter Camenzind, brought him success in 1904.He moved to Switzerland in 1912, and when war broke out two years later he volunteered for the German army but was declared unfit, so he worked with prisoners of war instead and publicly urged German intellectuals to reject nationalism. In 1916 his father died and his first wife suffered a severe mental health crisis, and during a later period of isolation and depression he wrote Steppenwolf, published in 1927, the year he turned fifty. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946 and died in Montagnola, Switzerland, in 1962.
