The Author
Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. After high school he worked briefly as a reporter for the Kansas City Star, where he learned the short sentences and vigorous language that became his style. Rejected by the US Army for poor eyesight, he joined the American Red Cross as an ambulance driver in Italy during the First World War, and in 1918, shortly before his nineteenth birthday, he was badly wounded by mortar fire, an experience he later drew on for A Farewell to Arms.In 1921 he married Hadley Richardson and moved with her to Paris, where he worked as a foreign correspondent and fell in with a circle of expatriate writers and artists whose lives became the material for The Sun Also Rises, which became his first major success when it was published in 1926. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 but was too unwell to attend the ceremony, so he sent a speech describing writing as "a lonely life." His physical and mental health declined in his final years, and he died by suicide in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1961.
