The Book
Aesop's Fables
Aesop was a storyteller in Ancient Greece whose stories about the everyday wins and losses of people, often told through talking animals, have been famous for more than two thousand years. This book features favorites like The Hare and the Tortoise and The Lion and the Mouse, as well as a wide selection of lesser-known but equally magical tales.

The Author
Aesop may never have existed. The earliest surviving account of him comes from the historian Herodotus, writing in the fifth century BCE, more than a century after Aesop was supposed to have lived. Herodotus calls him a maker of fables, enslaved to a man named Iadmon on the island of Samos, and says he was killed at Delphi. Later writers built these few details into a full life story in which Aesop was remarkably ugly but clever enough to win his freedom and advise kings, until a mission to Delphi for King Croesus of Lydia ended with him thrown from a cliff on a false charge of stealing a sacred object.None of Aesop's writings survive, and he may never have written his stories down. The fables attached to his name circulated orally and changed as storytellers adapted them. In Plato's Phaedo, Socrates says he turned some of Aesop's tales into verse while awaiting execution, and centuries later the Roman poet Phaedrus recast them in Latin. Modern collections gather stories from many periods and authors rather than the work of one man.
